MDIMs are tiles of a global map of Mars. You can mosaic several MDIMS together to view a larger area. MDIM files begin with the letter M, followed by the resolution code (see the tutorial). The remaining letters and numbers give the latitude and longitude of the center of the image. Thus MG05S182 means the image has a resolution of .925 km/pixel and it is centered at 5 degrees south latitude and 182 degrees west longitude. All longitudes on Mars are measured to the west. You must use the Acquire-PDS command to read in MDIMs.
There are also some raw images on the disk. These images have file names starting with an F. The letters and numbers denote the orbit, they do not tell you anything about the location of the image. The Acquire-PDS command must also be used to read these files.
The letters in parenthesis below relate to the folder names included in this folder.
VALLES MARINERIS with Outflow Channels (VM)
The great equatorial canyon system.
OLYMPUS MONS (OM)
The largest volcano in the solar system.
CERAUNIUS THOLUS and URANIUS THOLUS (CTUT)
Two interesting volcanos.
APOLLINARIS PATERA (AP)
Another volcano.
MAADIM VALLIS (MV)
A large dry river valley system.
YUTY CRATER (YC)
An interesting impact crater with fluidized ejecta blanket.
WARREGO VALLES (WV)
A dry river valley system with tributaries. This valley system is often shown in textbooks.
PARANA VALLES (PV)
Another dry river valley.
SOUTH POLE (SP)
South polar ice cap and surrounding regions.
NORTH POLE (NP)
North polar ice cap.
